Communications Intern

Duration of Internship: Fall Semester 2019, 10-16 hours per week 

Compensation: $1,000 stipend for the semester.

Supervisor

The intern will be mentored and supervised by the Communications Specialist. The intern will begin with an orientation and explanation of tasks, have weekly meetings with his/her supervisor and end the semester with an evaluation and survey.  

Duties and Tasks

The intern will assist with gathering, refining, creating and planning content to be used for communications to Kiawah Island community members. Primary communication tools include a website, emails, social media and a print newsletter. The intern will assist as needed with production planning, editing and copywriting. 

Two projects the intern will execute are prepping and refining content for a new website to launch December 2019 and planning and creating content for Facebook.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate will have experience in journalism, communications or marketing, with strong writing and organizational or planning skills. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Constant Contact, Wordpress and/or Facebook is helpful but not required.

Learning Objectives

The intern will gain exposure to diverse communication platforms and initiatives, learn tactics for communicating different types of messages and gain an understanding of how to create thoughtful and effective content, customized for various channels. The intern will gain experience cultivating community through the creation of Facebook events, posts and ads. The intern will gain insight into the website redesign process and engage in content review, planning, editing and creation. The intern will learn about large-scale community operations and working at a non-profit lead by a board of directors.
