Data Journalism Internship

The Dow Jones News Fund college internship programs help competitive juniors, seniors and graduate students jump-start careers in journalism through hands-on internships with leading news organizations. Interns receive one week of rigorous pre-internship training, a weekly salary during the internship and a $1,000 scholarship for those returning to school.

Interns attend a week of training led by journalists from Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) refining skills like making Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, learning computer-assisted reporting and analyzing and cleaning data in order to tell rich, often hidden, stories before starting internships where they apply these skills to issues like education, government, criminal justice and the economy.

To apply to any or all of the DJNF college internship programs, students must complete an online application, attach supporting documentation and take a test proctored at their college or university by Nov. 12.

Application Form:
Students must complete an online application where you will be prompted to create your candidate profile and answer job-specific questions for each program. Applicants must also include:

- a 500-word essay
- a résumé
- an unofficial college transcript

Test:
Students are required to complete a one-hour test to be considered for internships. CLICK HERE to locate and contact your school’s monitor to schedule a test time. Tests are sent to professors in early fall and testing continues up to the application deadline. To prepare, previous versions of the tests are available on our website.

Benefits
Students selected for the college internship programs receive immersive, specialized, all-expenses paid training at universities before their internships, weekly salaries of at least $400 for a minimum of 10 weeks, $1,000 scholarships when returning to school full-time and access to the Dow Jones News Fund Alumni Network. DJNF also provides one-year memberships to all data journalism interns to Investigative Editors and Reporters (IRE) and the Online News Association (ONA).

Criteria
College juniors, seniors and graduate students who are enrolled in school full-time as of the Nov. 12 deadline are eligible to apply for the college internship programs. This includes December graduates. Former professionals (those who have worked full-time on staff as a journalist for a year or more) in the U.S. or abroad are not eligible.
